Supporting Your Journey with Compassionate Doula Care

Bravely Birthed: an origin story

I want you to know that I strongly believe in your ability to give birth.

Bravely Birthed was born from a 4-year-long dream to support and love families as they welcome their babies and settle into postpartum life. I believe that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes just like breathing. But we trust our bodies to breathe more than we do to give birth. I am not naïve about the fact that the only predictable thing about birth is that it’s unpredictable but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it - however it unfolds for you.

I believe that an empowered birth is one where you feel heard, respected, informed, and autonomous. I don’t care where or how you give birth - but I do care about how you feel during that process and the care you receive. Empowerment looks different for everyone and I’m here to help you figure out what matters the most to you and tune out the background noise.

I trust in you to make the best decisions for yourself - and I will support your choices.

The journey from pregnancy, birth, and parenthood is a transformational experience that stays with us for the rest of our lives. It is with a grateful heart that I would welcome the opportunity to support you and witness you in your pregnancy and beyond.

I can’t wait to meet you and your family!

“Jesse is amazing she was so helpful throughout my entire pregnancy and I’m so glad she was there the day of. None of my OBS were there and it was really nice to see a friendly face. I know if it was just me and my husband I would have been a lot more stressed out. I used her 24-hour texting service a lot more after Mason was born and she ALWAYS replied right away, even at 2 in the morning. She never made me feel like my questions were silly and always had so much information. Thank you Jesse!”

“I had my first baby this year in a natural birth. Jesse was in a different province than me, so she couldn't be there for the birth. But she helped me prepare so much!!!! Jesse is incredibly kind, understanding, and gives you a lot of confidence. She is very open and easy to talk to about all your fears and uncertainty about childbirth. Thanks to Jesse I went into childbirth with the confidence that my body is built for this. Jesse told me that there will be a point in time where you think "I can't do this anymore", and as soon as that point hits - you are almost done! Sure enough there was a point in my labour where I thought (and said) "I can't do this" I remembered what Jesse told me, and I got a second wind of confidence. within 10 minutes my baby was in my arms. So thankful to Jesse, and I would really recommend her as a doula! She is knowledgeable, kind, and she will have your back 100%.”

“My Fiancé hired Jesse midway through her pregnancy when I had no idea what a doula was or is at that time never thought much of it. But over the next few months, we got in a few lessons and asked her a ton of questions all of which helped with things from how to swaddle a baby to changing her first diaper, it was very clear that she is passionate about what she does and does it well. When my Fiancé went into labor and we headed off to the delivery room is where Jesse really came through, not just for my partner but for me as well. She arrived quickly after we gave her the call that things were happening and was able to help coach/guide both me and my partner in a variety of positions/exercises from how I can apply counter pressure during contractions to bringing water snacks and a bag full of devices to help things along and keep mom in the zone. Overall she kept both me and my partner from having moments where we had no idea what to do and even kept me from passing out when she had to have an epidural done. Since the birth, she's also been there to check up on us and our little one and has popped by a few times to help out with the baby and around the house which has been a blessing as we get used to being parents!”

“I don't even know where to start to be honest. She was there from the moment we found out about our son. I didn't have a chance to talk with her lot at the beginning because I was always working. But she worked alongside my son's mother every step of the way. From being scared to being happy. Any questions or concerns she was right there for us and more so for her. The pregnancy didn't go ahead as planned, we had an emergency and met with doctors at the foothills hospital. They informed us we were having the baby that day (early). After seeing ultrasounds, the sack had broke and was slowly losing fluid. We contacted Jesse instantly after hearing the results and leaving the hospital. No word of a lie she was already at our birthing hospital waiting for us. We were scared and freaked out, to say the least. Jesse stood by our side every step of the way from doctors and nurses coming in and out in and out. Heck, she evening brought me down for a light snack " double cheeseburger and poutine". She brought calmness and reassurance to lift our spirits and send us in the direction we needed to be when we were left feeling like we didn't know what to do. She brought light to the beginning and the end of the whole experience. I honestly don't know how we would have been without her. Still to this day she checks in and is always asking and seeing how our little family is doing.”

“Jesse, our doula, helped us navigate the unexpected before our baby was born, provided us with information that allowed us to feel confident in our birthing choices, gently cared for us at home through labour and the delivery of our son, and showed up for us (coffee in hand) postpartum as we transitioned to the beautiful and overwhelming roles of mom and dad.”

“We had the incredible privilege of having Jess as our doula for our home birth, and we cannot recommend her highly enough. From the very first meeting, Jess exuded a calming presence and deep expertise that put us at ease. She took the time to understand our birth plan, listened to our concerns, and offered invaluable advice and support throughout the pregnancy.

During the labor, Jess was an unwavering source of strength and comfort. Her techniques for pain management and her reassuring words made an enormous difference. She seamlessly coordinated with our midwife, ensuring that everything went smoothly and that our needs were met at every stage. Her knowledge and experience were evident as she helped us navigate the more intense moments with confidence and grace.

Jess's postnatal support was equally exceptional. She checked in on us regularly, provided resources for recovery, and offered emotional support as we adjusted to life with our new baby. Her dedication and compassion were evident in every interaction.

Jess is not just a doula; she is a beacon of support and wisdom. We are profoundly grateful for her role in our birth experience and feel truly blessed to have had her by our side. If you are considering a home birth, we wholeheartedly recommend Jess to be part of your journey. She is an extraordinary doula who will make a lasting positive impact on your birth experience.

“Jesse is the whole package. Very competent, committed to your birth plan, and has spectacular bedside manner. She is both a strong confident presence in the room and comforting warmth to get you through the hard parts. I pride myself on being well researched but I always took a ton away from our prenatal meetings. She provided science backed information every time a hard pregnancy choice was faced which helped me to feel confident in my decisions. During labour she was always in the right place and just seemed to know exactly what you needed in that moment.”

 FAQs

  • A doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous informational, emotional & physical support to the birthing person & their partner before, during & after their birth.

  • No. While there is some overlap of care, doulas and midwives are not the same. A midwife is a trained, medical professional who looks after the clinical aspects of your birth and postpartm care. Midwives do offer some emotional support but they cant provide the constant support you receive from a doula. Midwives typically don’t show up for your birth until you are in active, established labour. Doula support can be provided at any stage of your labour.

  • A common misconception but no. I cannot replace the connection and existing trust you have with your partner and I don’t want to. They can love on you in your labour like nobody else! But, birth can come with overwhelm for partners. They don’t want to see you in pain and may not know what they can do for you in that moment. My job is to support you both and provide your partner with knowledge and tools to care for you.

  • I am fully trained and qualified. I completed a 16 week program that trained me in birth, fertility, postpartum and loss. Certification is a choice, not a requirement. My lived experience as a doula, the knowledge in my head and the love in my heart is usually the main reason why people hire me. I am happy to provide proof of training and invoices upon request.

  • If you want me to, yes! Birth photography is a passion of mine. I would love to document these moments for you so you don’t have to think about it. Prior to me taking any photos or videos there is release form for you to sign. You have the ultimate and final say over what you feel comfortable with me sharing or not sharing. Your confidentiality is important to me and I will always ask for your permission beforehand.

  • Absolutely. During our prenatal meetings we will go over infant feeding basics such as feeding positions, proper latching, how to deal with engorgement, hunger cues and anything else that comes up. I also offer breastfeeding support immediately after birth and during our postpartum visits as well. It takes time to learn! It is important to note that I am not a lactation consultant & some of your feeding issues may need specialized help from a certified lactation consultant.

  • Doulas still offer invaluable support whether your c section is planned or an emergency c section. Contrary to popular belief, doula’s are not just for unmedicated or medicated vaginal births. You’ll benefit from the extra support.

  • No. While some doulas may choose to only attend home births that is not typically the norm and would be a personal preference. In Calgary, most births take place in a hospital setting. If you are under midwifery care you have the option of home, the Arbour birth centre, Rocky View General, Foothills Medical Centre, South Health Campus or Peter Lougheed Hospital. Wherever you choose to give birth is where I would go to support you.

  • While I absolutely support your choice to choose the path of a wild pregnancy and free birth, I currently do not attend them.

  • I attend births in Calgary and surrounding areas such as Chestermere, Strathmore, Highriver and Canmore.

  • After the consult I will send you an email that outlines the next steps! If you decide to hire me as your doula I will prepare your contract and send it your way. Once signed and the first portion of your payment is received, you will be sent a welcome package & your first invoice. From that point on you have access to me for anything you may need.

  • Once your contract is signed, 50% percent of the package cost is paid and the remainder is to be paid at 36 weeks gestation. Payment is done via e-transfer. If you want to pay in full for simplicity sake that is also an option. I am also more than willing to work out flexible payment plans or discuss a sliding scale if there are financial barriers.m description

  • Yes! I love being able to spend time with you and your family in the early days. Postpartum is forever, we shouldn’t stop caring about the well being of parents after 6 weeks. We can work up a new contract and go from there.

  • Not at the moment. As a mom to a young toddler who is still very much dependent on me, I am not able to help with over night postpartum support. If this is something you need I will make sure to refer you to some amazing over night support Doulas!

  • In the rare event that I may not be able to attend your birth, a back up doula is ALWAYS arranged. There is no exact science when it comes to predicting due dates or unforeseen circumstances. I will do my best to arrange a meeting beforehand to make sure you feel comfortable with the doula who will be entering your birth space. Your comfort level is important to me.
